Around Fife

Fife is well known for the town of St Andrews; The Home of Golf which is next to the beautiful West Sands Beach. St Andrews University is Scotland's oldest institution of higher learning. South of St Andrews are the lovely small stone fishing villages of Crail, Anstruther, Pittenween and St Monans. Walkers will love the special environment that is the Fife Coastal Path. In Central Fife you will find Falkland with its impressive ruined palace, and the County town of Cupar, a market town set in rolling countryside.

Further west you will find Dunfermline which boasts a royal palace, a 12th Century abbey (this being the final resting place of Robert the Bruce and the burial site of eleven other Scottish kings and queens).Close by is the Royal Burgh of Culross, with its picturesque 17th Century cottages, now fully restored. Along the coast is Limekilns an ancient port of Benedictine monks of Dunfermline. If you follow the coast east towards Aberdour with its fine castle, you will pass the magnificence of the Forth Bridges.

Travelling east from Dunfermline you will find Kirkcaldy and Leven. Kirkcaldy is the main shopping centre for the area, and is popular for its art and entertainment at the Adam Smith Theatre the Art Gallery and Museum. Glenrothes is a new town but has the finest leisure facilities available. Leven is a popular holiday town on the coast, and families will find no shortage of things to do along the promenade, or along the nature trails within Letham Glen and Silverburn Park. There are many picturesque sea towns and villages along the coastline each with its own history.
